Professional fraternities at University of Manchester
The oldest professional fraternity story in the country, and the birthplace of Theta Tau outside America.
The University of Manchester has a long and rich professional fraternity history, being home to the first chapters of Alpha Kappa Psi in 2001 and later facilitating the mergers that produced the current incarnation — which carries the only three-letter chapter name in the network, Sigma Upsilon Phi.
In 2025 a Brother from Manchester's own AKPsi chapter founded the first non-American chapter of Theta Tau, the professional engineering fraternity, which is currently going through certification.
Practically, that means a Manchester student today walks into something that has already survived two decades of handovers: an alumni base in banking, consulting and industry, a chapter that knows how to run a recruitment cycle, and a second, younger engineering chapter still writing its first chapters of history.
