What Is Alpha Kappa Psi? A Guide for UK Students
The oldest and largest professional business fraternity, its UK and European presence, and what pledging AKPsi actually looks like.
Alpha Kappa Psi (AKPsi) is the oldest and largest professional business fraternity in the world. Founded at NYU in 1904, it now has chapters across North America, Asia and — since 2001 — the UK, with its European flagship at the University of Manchester.
AKPsi in the UK and Europe
The Sigma Upsilon Phi chapter at Manchester has almost a thousand graduates and is the anchor of AKPsi's presence in Europe. Interest groups and colonies are active or forming at LSE, UCL and other London institutions. Chapters recruit each semester through the SU society system.
Do you have to study business?
No. AKPsi's charter is co-ed and open to any student, regardless of degree, who is committed to a career in business broadly defined — finance, consulting, tech, law, entrepreneurship. Chapters are deliberately cross-degree because that mix is what makes the professional programme valuable.
How recruitment works
A one-to-two-week rush period each semester with professional events (case night, industry panel, resume workshop), social events (coffee chats, dinners) and a formal interview. Successful candidates receive a bid and enter the pledge process — six to ten weeks of history, values and team projects — culminating in initiation as a brother for life.
Costs
Dues in the UK are broadly comparable to a mid-tier SU society plus a one-off international initiation fee. Exact numbers vary by chapter and year; recruitment events publish current figures. Financial hardship arrangements exist.
AKPsi vs Delta Sigma Pi
Both are professional business fraternities, both co-ed, both very old. In the UK, AKPsi has meaningfully deeper institutional presence — DSP does not currently operate active UK chapters. Where both exist (in the US), chapter culture varies more within each fraternity than between them.
Year abroad and transfers
US AKPsi brothers on year abroad in the UK can visit and often affiliate with UK chapters, and UK brothers reciprocate at US chapters when studying abroad. Full transfer procedures are handled through the international HQ.
What pledging actually involves
A structured programme of professional development (skills workshops, alumni interviews, team business plans), fraternity education (history, values, chapter operations) and community building (retreats, service projects, socials). Non-hazing is a hard rule.
Notable alumni
AKPsi's alumni include Fortune 500 CEOs, senators, professional athletes, entrepreneurs and public servants. The international HQ maintains a list; the honest reason to join is not the famous names but the twenty ordinary brothers who will write your reference letters in ten years' time.
