Theta Tau is the oldest and largest professional engineering fraternity in the world. Founded in 1904 at the University of Minnesota, it is co-ed, open to any engineering student, and has been steadily expanding beyond North America — with active student interest at UK engineering universities.
Theta Tau in the UK and Europe
Interest groups and colonies are forming at Imperial, UCL and other major UK engineering departments, coordinated through the Interfraternity Forum as the neutral front door for HQs looking at Europe. Formal chapter recognition follows the same colony-to-chapter pathway used across Theta Tau's international expansion.
Do you have to study engineering?
Yes — Theta Tau's charter is specifically for students enrolled in an accredited engineering programme (any discipline: mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, computer, biomedical, and so on). Adjacent degrees like computer science or applied physics may qualify depending on the chapter's interpretation and the student's course.
How recruitment works
A one-to-two-week rush period each semester with professional events (industry talks, engineering site visits, resume workshops), social events (coffee chats, dinners) and an interview. Successful candidates receive a bid and enter a pledge programme covering history, values and team engineering projects, culminating in initiation as a brother for life.
Theta Tau vs Alpha Kappa Psi
Both are professional fraternities and both are co-ed. AKPsi is a business fraternity — open to any degree with a business career focus. Theta Tau is an engineering fraternity — restricted to engineering students. In practice students at UK universities with both a business and engineering interest often consider AKPsi; those firmly on an engineering path gravitate to Theta Tau.
What pledging actually involves
Professional development (technical talks, mentorship with alumni engineers, team design projects), fraternity education (history, values, chapter operations) and community building (service projects, socials, retreats). Non-hazing is a hard rule enforced by international HQ.
International students and transfers
Theta Tau is open to international students at any chapter and supports affiliation for brothers studying abroad. Full transfer procedures are handled through the international HQ.
